War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity
Russian forces in Ukraine have committed and continue to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity in the occupied regions of Ukraine, in violation of international law and basic human decency. Russian crimes in Ukraine constitute genocide and ethnic cleansing, with Russia’s stated war aims including the elimination of Ukrainians as a separate country, language, culture, and people.
Footage was released showing Russian soldiers executing at least six injured Ukrainian prisoners of war captured in Avdiivka. The summary execution of POW is a heinous violation of the laws of war.
Overview
Prime Minister of Denmark Frederiksen stated that her country would donate its “entire artillery” to Ukraine, likely referring to Denmark’s stockpile of 155mm shells. Smaller European countries continue to play an outsized role in arming Ukraine, often having donated substantial percentage points of their entire GDP in aid.
Germany defense contractor Rheinmetall announced that it would be opening a munitions factory in Ukraine with the aim to produce over 100,000 artillery shells per year, part of Rheinmetall and Germany’s effort to boost Ukrainian defense-industrial capacity.
