War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity
Russian forces in Ukraine have committed and continue to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity in the occupied regions of Ukraine, in violation of international law and basic human decency. Russian crimes in Ukraine constitute genocide and ethnic cleansing, with Russia’s stated war aims including the elimination of Ukrainians as a separate country, language, culture, and people.
No especially notable atrocities reported today.
Overview
Russia and Ukraine traded limited missile strikes, with a couple dozen Russian missiles (half downed) launched at several Ukrainian cities and one Ukrainian missile (likely falling after being intercepted) hitting a shopping center in Belgorod, killing several civilians.
Ukrainian forces have begun abandoning positions in eastern and southern Avdiivka following Russian advances in the north and south of the city that have made continued defense untenable. This order likely should have been given far earlier, as soon as the Russians broke through near the lake in the north.
Germany signed an agreement to provide Ukraine with around $8 billion in aid through 2024, including APCs, artillery, over 100,000 shells, air defense systems, and anti-air missiles. France also signed a separate agreement for another $3 billion in aid.
