War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity
Russian forces in Ukraine have committed and continue to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity in the occupied regions of Ukraine, in violation of international law and basic human decency. Russian crimes in Ukraine constitute genocide and ethnic cleansing, with Russia’s stated war aims including the elimination of Ukrainians as a separate country, language, culture, and people.
Russian drone footage was released showing Russian soldiers executing multiple surrendering Ukrainians near Bakhmut. The execution of surrendering personnel is a heinous violation of the laws of war.
Overview
President Zelenskyy has begun a wide-ranging replacement of senior military officials following the dismissal of Commander-in-Chief General Zaluzhnyi in favor of Colonel General Syrskyi, with many of the military’s senior-most staff being replaced.
The situation in Avdiivka is now reportedly critical, with Russian forces appearing to have rapidly advanced into central Avdiivka from the north, cutting off the last paved road that led into the settlement. The only remaining route of supply and retreat appears to be a dirt path located to the west, which itself could come under strain. Ukrainian forces will likely be forced to abandon the city within days; continuing to hold it could lead to a greatly increased rate of losses or even encirclement.
