War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity
Russian forces in Ukraine have committed and continue to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity in the occupied regions of Ukraine, in violation of international law and basic human decency. Russian crimes in Ukraine constitute genocide and ethnic cleansing, with Russia’s stated war aims including the elimination of Ukrainians as a separate country, language, culture, and people.
According to the Ukrainian General Staff, Russian forces have drastically increased their use of tear gas grenades in recent months, consistent with previous claims made by Russian and Ukrainian soldiers. The use of chemical weapons, including irritants, is a violation of the laws of war.
Overview
The United States Senate came closer to passing a Ukraine/Israel/Taiwan aid package following the collapse of a Republican push to pair the aid with a border security bill, which failed due to (other) Republican opposition. While the aid package itself has not been finalized or voted upon, the move to push it forward received a supermajority of support.
New Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Syrksyi identified several of his primary goals in his new role. To quote the Institute for the Study of War: “Syrskyi stated that his primary agenda is to set clear and detailed plans for the Ukrainian command as well as to facilitate the quick distribution and delivery of necessary materiel to combat units deployed throughout the theater. Syrskyi stated that he intends to balance between… combat missions and… restoring and training Ukrainian units. Syrskyi added that the introduction of new technical solutions and the implementation of lessons learned from successful modern combat experience… is a path towards Ukrainian victory, echoing themes from… Zaluzhnyi.” In all, these are modest changes, if changes at all.
Ukrainian forces launched another drone attack Russian oil and gas facilities, this time striking the Ilsky and Afipsky refineries in Krasnodar Krai Oblast.
