War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity
Russian forces in Ukraine have committed and continue to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity in the occupied regions of Ukraine, in violation of international law and basic human decency. Russian crimes in Ukraine constitute genocide and ethnic cleansing, with Russia’s stated war aims including the elimination of Ukrainians as a separate country, language, culture, and people.
No especially notable atrocities reported today.
Overview
Reports indicate that the situation in Avdiivka is growing increasingly desperate, with Russian forces launching innumerable attacks against the remaining outgunned and outmanned Ukrainian forces stationed in the city. Given current trends, the city is likely to fall before the end of March.
A leaked report indicated that the purchase price of Iranian-made Shahed and related systems is substantially higher than previously thought, with each unit costing nearly as much as much more powerful, longer ranged, and harder to intercept cruise missiles. If this is true, it seems likely that Russia turned to importing Shaheds not because they were a cheaper alternative to cruise missiles, but because their ability to manufacture such missiles remains extremely limited.
The fate of Ukraine aid in the United States Congress continues to be uncertain as House and increasingly Senate Republicans have repeatedly failed to pass or even endorse their own proposed bills.
