War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity
Russian forces in Ukraine have committed and continue to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity in the occupied regions of Ukraine, in violation of international law and basic human decency. Russian crimes in Ukraine constitute genocide and ethnic cleansing, with Russia’s stated war aims including the elimination of Ukrainians as a separate country, language, culture, and people.
No especially notable atrocities reported today.
Overview
President Zelenskyy confirmed previous reports that he is considering replacing not just General Zaluzhnyi as Commander-in-Chief, but a host of other military and political officials. It is generally believed that Minister of Defense Umerov, a previous anti-corruption advocate who appears to have been well-received at his new post, is one of the few likely *not* up for consideration.
Dysfunction in the United States Congress continues to plague efforts to pass a new Ukraine aid bill, with Republicans in both chambers now looking to sink their own dueling bills and refusing to compromise with Democrats on the issue of border policy. The United States – Ukraine’s largest foreign aid supplier – has not been able to provide equipment for over a month, with Ukraine now reportedly experiencing deep “shell hunger” due to this and the continued failure of European Union countries to provide alternative sources of munitions.
The Netherlands indicated that it would transfer another 6 F-16 aircraft to Ukraine later in the year, in addition to the 18 previously promised.
