War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity
Russian forces in Ukraine have committed and continue to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity in the occupied regions of Ukraine, in violation of international law and basic human decency. Russian crimes in Ukraine constitute genocide and ethnic cleansing, with Russia’s stated war aims including the elimination of Ukrainians as a separate country, language, culture, and people.
No especially notable atrocities reported today.
Overview
A Ukrainian artillery strike reportedly killed 28 people at a restaurant in Russian-occupied Lysychansk. It is unclear how many (if any) civilians were present, with multiple sources indicating that a gathering of occupation officials was being held at the site, at least one of which – a Luhansk so-called “People’s Republic” minister – confirmed killed.
Western nations appear to be moving closer to using frozen Russian state funds held in Western banks to aid Ukraine, with several countries having now signaled their support for such a move.
President Zelenskyy made his latest visit to the frontlines, meeting with Ukrainian troops and distributing medals to units stationed in Robotyne, a city that is quite literally on the frontlines. Russian dictator Putin has yet to make even one similar appearance since the war began.
Periodic skirmishing continues to be reported along the Russo-Ukrainian border north of Kharkiv, with Russian groups making limited forays into Ukrainian territory west of the Oskil River.
