War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity
Russian forces in Ukraine have committed and continue to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity in the occupied regions of Ukraine, in violation of international law and basic human decency. Russian crimes in Ukraine constitute genocide and ethnic cleansing, with Russia’s stated war aims including the elimination of Ukrainians as a separate country, language, culture, and people.
Russian forces are reportedly making increasing use of tear gas in the Southern Theatre, mostly in the form of drone-dropped K-51 grenades. The use of chemical weapons, including irritants, is a violation of the laws of war.
Overview
Russian forces appear to be launching more widely-dispersed drone and missile attacks which, according to the Institute for the Study of War, are likely intended to disrupt and force the redeployment of Ukrainian air defenses, which are currently heavily concentrated around major Ukrainian cities due to Russia’s Terror Bombing campaigns.
Ukrainian GUR intelligence head Lieutenant General Budanov indicated that Russia has officially begun its anticipated offensive towards Kupyansk, in line with recent reports of increased Russian offensive activity in that sector. A full analysis will be forthcoming should it prove necessary.
Dutch Minister of Defense Ollengren announced a roughly $265 million aid package for Ukraine including funding for cyber defenses and the purchasing of artillery shells and other military equipment.
The United States is reportedly very close to delivering its first batch of Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bombs to Ukraine, intended to provide a cheaper, longer-ranged, less powerful alternative to the GMLRS rockets typically fired by HIMARS and M270 systems.
