War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity
Russian forces in Ukraine have committed and continue to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity in the occupied regions of Ukraine, in violation of international law and basic human decency. Russian crimes in Ukraine constitute genocide and ethnic cleansing, with Russia’s stated war aims including the elimination of Ukrainians as a separate country, language, culture, and people.
No especially notable atrocities reported today.
Overview
The status of the Russian Il-76 downed over Belgorod Oblast remains unclear. It appears probable that it was struck by Ukrainian air defenses, and Russia claims it notified Ukraine that it was carrying POWs 15 minutes before it was struck, but none of this information has been confirmed.
Ukrainian drones hit a Russian oil refinery in Krasnodar Krai Oblast, igniting a large fire. It is unclear how long the facility will be disabled for, if at all.
Igor Girkin – notable Russian milblogger and former FSB agent involved in the 2014 war with Ukraine, including the downing of MH317, for which he was convicted of war crimes – was sentenced to four years in prison for criticizing the Kremlin’s handling of the war effort. Separately, a woman accused of delivering a hidden bomb that killed another notable Russian milblogger was sentenced to 27 years in prison.
Germany indicated its intention to deliver substantial aid to Ukraine in 2024, including at least 80 Leopard (likely 1) tanks as well as drones, APCs, radars, demining equipment, and more, as well as provide training to Ukrainian troops in Germany.
