War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity
Russian forces in Ukraine have committed and continue to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity in the occupied regions of Ukraine, in violation of international law and basic human decency. Russian crimes in Ukraine constitute genocide and ethnic cleansing, with Russia’s stated war aims including the elimination of Ukrainians as a separate country, language, culture, and people.
No especially notable atrocities reported today.
Overview
Russian forces launched another large missile strike targeting northern and central Ukraine, including at least 44 missiles and – unusually – no drones. About half of the missiles were intercepted.
Turkey’s Grand National Assembly voted to approve Sweden’s application to join NATO, which is expected to be signed by Turkish President Erdogan shortly, leaving Hungary as the only holdout on Swedish membership. This newest expansion of NATO – one of Russia’s professed *casus belli* – has come as a direct result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, undoing decades of Soviet and even pre-Soviet neutrality in Sweden and Finland.
European countries reiterated their continuing support for Ukraine and the need to provide additional materiel amidst a meeting of European Union foreign ministers.
To that end, NATO signed contracts for the provision of at least 220,000 artillery shells to Ukraine, worth around $1.2 billion.
