War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity
Russian forces in Ukraine have committed and continue to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity in the occupied regions of Ukraine, in violation of international law and basic human decency. Russian crimes in Ukraine constitute genocide and ethnic cleansing, with Russia’s stated war aims including the elimination of Ukrainians as a separate country, language, culture, and people.
No especially notable atrocities reported today.
Overview
Russia launched another one of its near-daily drone attacks on targets across Ukraine, the vast majority of which were intercepted. The vast majority of the attacks have consisted of one to three dozen drones and a handful of missiles, likely indicating that Russia’s stockpile of long-range munitions is tightly constrained.
For the first time, Ukraine officially celebrated Christmas on December 25th instead of the traditional (Russian-dominated) Eastern Orthodox church date of January 7th, an alteration made in response to the Russian invasion.
There are some indications that Russian forces in the south have greatly reduced their use of air support following the (likely) same-day downing of three Russian fighters by a Patriot air defense system. The further deployment of such systems could seriously disrupt Russian air operations in Ukraine.
