War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity
Russian forces in Ukraine have committed and continue to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity in the occupied regions of Ukraine, in violation of international law and basic human decency. Russian crimes in Ukraine constitute genocide and ethnic cleansing, with Russia’s stated war aims including the elimination of Ukrainians as a separate country, language, culture, and people.
Russia is refusing to reveal where Maksym Butkevych – a Ukrainian soldier and former journalist/human rights activist who was captured in Luhansk Oblast early in the war – is being held, after he was convicted of war crimes by a Moscow court. Evidence shows that Butkevych was nowhere near the alleged site of the crime, and it is reported he was tortured before “confessing.” The torture of POWs is a violation of the laws of war.
Overview
Russian drone and artillery attacks killed at least three civilians and damaged civil infrastructure in Dnipropetrovsk and Kherson Oblasts.
Ukrainian naval drones destroyed two small Russian landing boats in Crimea. While not major combatants or notable craft, the continuous attacks on Black Sea Fleet naval assets continues to seriously degrade Russian naval power in the region.
At least 30,000 Ukrainian soldiers have completed basic infantry training in Britain, with assistance from a wide range of NATO and non-NATO Allies.
