War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity
Russian forces in Ukraine have committed and continue to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity in the occupied regions of Ukraine, in violation of international law and basic human decency. Russian crimes in Ukraine constitute genocide and ethnic cleansing, with Russia’s stated war aims including the elimination of Ukrainians as a separate country, language, culture, and people.
No especially notable atrocities reported today.
Overview
A January 31st Ukrainian Storm Shadow strike on Belbek Air Base in occupied Crimea damaged at least three Russian aircraft. Ukraine’s continued ability to strike such targets is heavily reliant on Storm Shadow/SCALP missiles, which are few in number and low in supply, leading to increasing calls for the provision of other air-launched cruise missiles or substitute systems.
The United States Senate is set to take a “test vote” on a Ukraine/Israel/border funding deal that has been held up for months due to opposition by Republicans in the House of Representatives (who originally demanded the deals be linked). It is unclear whether this effort will pass, and Republican leaders have indicated that Ukraine aid may end up being passed separately.
