War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity
Russian forces in Ukraine have committed and continue to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity in the occupied regions of Ukraine, in violation of international law and basic human decency. Russian crimes in Ukraine constitute genocide and ethnic cleansing, with Russia’s stated war aims including the elimination of Ukrainians as a separate country, language, culture, and people.
No especially notable atrocities reported today.
Overview
Numerous reports from both Russian and Ukrainian sources indicated that a Russian A-50U AWACS and an Il-22M command plane were struck while flying over the Sea of Azov, with the former destroyed and the latter damaged. While much of the available information is little more than rumors, Russian sources appeared to agree that this was a friendly fire incident. How and why Russian air defenses would target and then fire upon two large, slow-moving aircraft over a body of water located 100 miles behind the frontlines and totally controlled by Russia is entirely unclear, and utterly baffling if true.
