War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity

Russian forces in Ukraine have committed and continue to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity in the occupied regions of Ukraine, in violation of international law and basic human decency. Russian crimes in Ukraine constitute genocide and ethnic cleansing, with Russia’s stated war aims including the elimination of Ukrainians as a separate country, language, culture, and people.

According to the BBC, thousands of Ukrainian civilians have been detained and held without trial or even formal record in Russia, reportedly on the grounds that they are “prisoners of war.” As with other similar abductions across the occupied territories, some of these civilians have been tortured, sent to penal colonies, or received other cruel and unusual punishments. The illegal detainment and mistreatment of civilians in occupied territories is a violation of the laws of war and a crime against humanity, and civilians may not be falsely classified as “prisoners of war” to deprive them of their right to trial and release.

Overview

Russia launched another wave of nearly 60 drones and missiles against Ukrainian infrastructure as part of its second Terror Bombing campaign. Most of the projectiles were intercepted, but Ukrainian officials reiterated the need for increased air defense systems and munitions.

A Ukrainian businessman was reportedly able to purchase classified design documents related to Russia’s Orlan-10 UAV and electronic warfare systems. According to the businessman, the employees who sold the data planned to use their profits to leave Russia.

Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa made a visit to Kyiv, the latest in a long line of Western officials making supportive visits to the Ukrainian capital. While there, she sheltered from Russian missile attacks, announced $37 million in funding for Ukrainian equipment, and the provision of generators and transformers aimed at shoring up Ukraine’s energy grid in the wake of renewed Russian attacks.
