War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity

Russian forces in Ukraine have committed and continue to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity in the occupied regions of Ukraine, in violation of international law and basic human decency. Russian crimes in Ukraine constitute genocide and ethnic cleansing, with Russia’s stated war aims including the elimination of Ukrainians as a separate country, language, culture, and people.

President Zelenskyy reiterated in a speech that Russia is undertaking an “organized” campaign to repress and erase the identity of Ukrainian children in the occupied territories, including the suppression of the Ukrainian language, forced deportation and adoption of children, and altering history to suit the Kremlin’s vision of the world and the war.

Overview

Ukraine has begun using trains to move freight trucks trapped at the Polish-Ukrainian border due to an ongoing protest by Polish truckers.

Japan announced $4.5 billion in future aid to Ukraine in the form of $1 billion worth of humanitarian aid like generators and $3.5 billion worth of credit guarantees to underpin the loans helping to sustain the Ukrainian government and economy.

Germany announced another aid package to Ukraine, including 14 vehicles, 70 grenade launchers, nearly 2,000 artillery shells, and 100,000 first aid kits. This is a relatively small aid package in absolute terms.

United States National Security Advisor Finer stated that America’s aims include the arming and provisioning of Ukraine such that Russia is forced to negotiate for an end to the war on Ukrainian terms, or face a strengthened opponent capable of defeating it through 2024 and 2025. Congressional deadlock threatens to undermine this strategic vision, however.
